Ashghal announces the completion of 4 roads and infrastructure projects in Al Wakra Municipality

The Public Works Authority ‘Ashghal’ organised a meeting with Al Wakra City residents in Al Wakra municipality headquarters on Wednesday, January 17, 2018.

During this meeting, Ashghal announced the completion of four roads and infrastructure development projects in Al Wakra Municipality and showcased the infrastructure, expressway, and main roads projects in Al Wakra. Mr. Mansour Ajran Al-Buainain, Director of Al Wakra Municipality, and Mr. Mansour Ahmad Al-Khater, Member of the Municipal Council for Al Wakra Constituency, along with a number of Al Wakra residents attended the meeting. From Ashghal, Eng. Saoud Ali Al-Tamimi, Manager of Roads Projects Department, and Eng. Badr Mohamed Darwish, Assistant Manager of Highway Projects Department, in addition to a number of sections heads and engineers attended the meeting.

Mr. Mansour Ajran Al-Buainain, Director of Al Wakra Municipality, expressed his thanks and appreciation for the Public Works Authority's initiative to introduce its future projects within Al Wakra Municipality and to involve the residents of Al Wakra City with their ambitious plans and future vision to achieve sustainable urban development that meets the needs of Al Wakra residents, whether they were economic, educational, service or other needs. Al-Buainain added that the meeting today provided an opportunity to review the details of future projects and urban plans developed in accordance with the Qatar’s National Vision 2030. He pointed out that Al Wakra Municipality is paying all its efforts in cooperation with all governmental and private sectors in order to contribute to urban development.

Mr. Mansour Al-Khater, Member of the Central Municipal Council for Al Wakra Constituency, thanked the Public Works Authority for organising the meeting today, explaining the authority’s projects to the public and providing the opportunity to discuss suggestions and inquiries. He also expressed his thanks for Ashghal’s efforts in implementing projects during 2016 and 2017 as well as the projects to be implemented in 2018, and praised Ashghal’s great achievements and accelerating the pace of completion, especially in Al Wakra.

Eng. Saoud Al-Tamimi, Manager of Roads Projects Department, gave a presentation on the roads and infrastructure development projects in Al Wakra City for whose implementation the government allocated 6 billion riyals. Eng. Al-Tamimi noted that Ashghal completed two roads and infrastructure development projects in the residential areas of the citizens’ land plots in North Al Wukair and West Al Mashaf (phase 3). The two projects include1829 residential plots and are part of the plan to develop roads and infrastructure that serve more than 10 thousand residential plots for citizens’ sub-divisions in various areas of the country.  Moreover, Ashghal completed two roads and infrastructure development projects in the residential areas in Al Wakra West

During the meeting, Eng. Saoud Al-Tamimi gave an overview on the roads and infrastructure development projects currently being implemented in Al Wakra city. These projects include the Al Mashaf West Roads and Infrastructure Development Project (package 4) which comprises the development of approximately 7 km of roads and four signal-controlled intersections in addition to the provision of street lighting and the construction of a 23 km long drainage network.

These projects in Al Wakra also include roads development projects, among which is the project aiming at the development of the road connecting the Commercial Road to Al Wakra Main Road (packages 4, 5, and 7) as well as the Road Improvement Works within zones 90-95 (phase 4) which comprises the construction of new roads and the improvement of existing ones with a total length of 55 km, in addition to the roads development project West of Al Mashaf (package 4). Eng. Saoud Al-Tamimi noted that several projects as part of the Local Areas Infrastructure Development Programme are planned to be started by Ashghal in 2018; among which are the Roads and Infrastructure Development Project of the Government subdivisions areas in Al Wukair South and the Roads and Infrastructure Development Project in Al Wukair (Packages 3, 4 and 5).

Eng. Badr Mohamed Darwish, Assistant Manager of Highway Projects Department, gave a presentation on the expressway projects that were opened to traffic to serve Al Wakra, Al Wukair, and Al Mashaf areas and connect them to the other areas of the country. These projects are the Orbital Road, Hamad Port Road and Al Wukair Road (Bu Ghurban Interchange) which is a three- level free flowing junction that will provide Al Wukair residents with a direct link for Mesaieed from one side and Doha from the other side via the G-Ring Road. This interchange will facilitate the traffic movement of the heavy vehicles from and to Hamad Port, G-Ring Road, Industrial Area, and Orbital Road. This interchange will also improve the traffic movement of road users heading from Mesaieed towards Doha, G-Ring Road, Industrial Area and all the way to Salwa Road. 

Details on the projects presented in the meeting:

First: Completed infrastructure projects

1.    Roads and Infrastructure Development Project for Citizens’ Sub-Divisions in Al Wukair North

The project built infrastructure for 643 land plots in Al Wukair North, such as the construction and development of a total of 23 km of local roads, and 12 signal-controlled intersections to connect the new residential area to the main and local roads in Al Wukair North. This is in addition to the provision of roads and access roads to the residential and commercial buildings along with the construction of drainage, electricity, water, and communications networks.

2. Roads and Infrastructure for Citizens’ Sub-Divisions in Al Mashaf West (Package 3)

The project provided infrastructure for 1186 land plots such as a local road network with a total length of 28 km besides 13 signalised intersections of which 3 are major junctions to improve the connectivity with the surrounding main and local roads and to provide access roads to the residential and commercial facilities that will be constructed. The project also included the installation of street lighting and networks of drainage, electricity, water, and communications.

3. Al Wakra West Road and Infrastructure Development Project (packages 1 and 3):

The project aimed to create full infrastructure to Al Wakra West area to serve a total of 1193 residential units. The works included the upgrade of the local road network which extends to approximately 40 km by renovating and restoring the old roads and carrying on the construction of the unfinished ones. The project also included the construction of two signal controlled intersections and three roundabouts The project also included the provision of street lighting, parking lots, pedestrian and cycle paths, landscaping works. The project also included the construction of a surface water drainage network, the construction of a treated wastewater network, and the development and provision of public service facilities including drainage, water, electricity, communications, and intelligent transport systems.

Second: Expressway projects that serve Al Wakra and the Southern areas

1. Doha Express Highway (the southern part):

The main road and its five interchanges were opened to traffic to provide an additional option for road users’ trip between Al Wakra, Al Wukair, Al Mashaf and Doha. The opening of the southern part of Doha Express Highway (Al Wakra Bypass road) has made a significant change in the traffic movement in the region by attracting a big part of the traffic movement which used to pass through Al Wakra city via the Al Wakra Main Road to reach Doha in the north or to reach Mesaieed in the south.

Al Wakra Main Road currently comprises only two lanes in each direction however, with the construction of Doha Express Highway which includes five lanes in each direction road users can now use Doha Express Highway to reach their destinations bypassing the traffic through Al Wakra city; this will reduce traffic congestion significantly and provide a direct and easy access to the G-Ring Road and to Hamad International Airport or Doha, or to the southern areas of Mesaieed and Hamad Port as the Doha Express Highway is directly linked to the Orbital Road.

The Doha Express Highway is located west of Al Wakra city and begins near Al Mashaf Road in the north and extends for 11 km all the way to Mesaieed Road in the south. The main road consists of five lanes in each direction, and five multi-level interchanges including bridges, underpasses, pedestrian and cycle paths with a total length of 87 km. The total cost of the project reached more than 2 billion Qatari Riyals.

2. The G-Rind Road:

The G-Ring Road is one of the key axes of Qatar's expressway network providing additional options for traffic movement thus, complementing the other axes of the expressway network; it is also linked to many of them such as the Orbital Road and the southern part of Doha Express Highway (Al Wakra Bypass Road).

The G-Ring Road serves numerous neighbourhoods and residential and commercial facilities in Al Wakra, Al Wukair, Al Thumama, and other areas being linked to the southern part of Doha Express Highway at the four-level Umm Bishr Interchange which comprises the highest bridge in Qatar approximately 36 meters high. The G-Ring Road had a significant positive impact on the traffic movement in the country’s Southern areas. It extends over 22 kilometres from Hamad International Airport to the Orbital Highway, and includes five lanes in each direction and 48 km of pedestrians and cycle paths, surrounded by landscaping works.

3. Orbital Road and Hamad Port Road

The Public Works Authority opened in 2017 the first phase of the New orbital Highway and Truck Route for a distance of 125 km, to run from Hamad Port to Al Shamal Road towards Lusail and Al Khor. That opening serve several municipalities, involving Al Rayyan, Al Khor and Al Thakhira, Al Wakra, Umm Slal and Al Sheehaniya as well as provide better and direct access between residential neighbourhoods and business and industrial areas, such as Logistics Village and Industrial Area in Doha. The road contributes greatly to enhancing trade and people traffic across the entire areas. Upon completion, the Orbital Road will shorten travel time to approximately 50%.

Also, Ashghal opened in August 2017 the 14 km Hamad Port Road to connect Hamad Port and G-Ring Road, and includes four lanes in each direction, easing the movement of trucks between Hamad Port and Industrial Area, enhancing the movement of goods between the port and all areas of the country, especially that the road is considered a corridor that reduces journey times, instead of the main Orbital Highway. Hamad Port Road is expected to reduce travel time bypassing the Orbital Road.
