Completion of Phase 1 of converting Al Tarfa Roundabout into a signal-controlled intersection

The Public Works Authority ‘Ashghal’ announces the completion of Phase 1 of converting Al Tarfa Roundabout (known as the Golf Course R/A) into a signal-controlled intersection.

Eng. Mohammed Arqoub Al Khalid, Head of Doha City Projects in Ashghal, said that converting Al Tarfa Roundabout into a signal-controlled intersection aims to enhance traffic flow and increase the road capacity of the intersection and the roads within this project. Eng. Mohammed Al Khalid stated that Phase 1 included the partial opening of Al Tarfa Intersection to traffic movement on the morning of Friday, 16 March 2018. This included opening two lanes of the intersection on the University Street, one to turn right into the Golf Course Street (towards Lusail) and the other to turn left into the Street leading to Al Tarfa Street (towards the diversion to Al Shamal Road) or to take a u-turn into the University Street.

In addition, two lanes of the intersection were opened on the Golf Course Street to continue straight to the Street leading to Al Tarfa Street, or to turn left into the University Street (towards Doha). Another two lanes were opened on the Street leading to Al Tarfa Street, which will allow traffic to continue straight to the Golf Course Street, in addition to a separate lane to turn right into the University Street, as shown in the attached map. Eng. Mohammed Al Khalid noted that Ashghal is currently implementing the second and last phase of converting Al Tarfa Roundabout into an intersection, which is expected to be completed in May 2018.

It’s worth mentioning that the Conversion of Al Tarfa Roundabout into an Intersection includes works to improve a number of streets in the area. The number of lanes of a 500-meter long section of the University Street will be increased to four main lanes and two left turn lanes in both directions. The number of lanes of a 400-meter long section of Al Khor Coastal Road will be increased to four main lanes and three left turn lanes in both directions. The number of lanes of a 600-meter long section of Golf Course Street will be increased to three main lanes and three left turn lanes in both directions.

The project will also include sidewalks on all the sides of the intersection, cycle lanes, street lighting as well as road signs, in addition to upgrading the stormwater drainage network, and protecting existing utilities of Ooredoo and Kahramaa, located under the roads. The authority requests all road users to abide by the new speed limits, and follow the newly installed road signs to ensure their safety.
